These three Topics require assessments to be undertaken when making ACFI claims, and each plays an important role in both the health and wellbeing of your residents. Skin Integrity and Wounds are often associated with pain. Understanding the impact of pain in older people and the ways of assessing for pain are fundamental to good care. Because pain affects most domains covered in the EBCAT series, its importance cannot be over-estimated. The early identification of swallowing impairments among older people is critical because it is associated with the clinical risks of choking and aspiration pneumonia. The prevalence of dysphagia increases with age and it is becoming more frequently identified in older people.

While the ACFI Assessment Pack does not have specified assessments for the Complex Health items, the EBCAT comprehensively addresses that gap for Pain, Swallowing, and Skin & Wounds.
